What are high cycle springs?
High cycle springs are also known as extended life springs. Let’s look closer at how they’re different and why you would want to use them.
How are high cycle springs different from regular springs?
The lifespan of garage door springs is typically 10,000 cycles. Depending on how often you use the garage door, for example, this may be roughly 7 years.
If you want springs that last longer, you can install high cycle springs. These springs can be made more durable by increasing the thickness of the steel wire and also by making the spring longer.
These changes translate into a spring that is rated for a higher number of cycles.
How long do extended life springs last?
It depends on what type of springs you have. There are two different kinds of garage door springs, torsion and extension.
It is common to use extended life torsion springs that are rated for twice the number of cycles, or 20,000 cycles. You can also get springs rated for 3 times or 4 times the standard number of cycles.
So it really depends on two main factors: 1) how long you plan to stay in your home, 2) will the springs fit.
If you will be there a long time, it may be worthwhile to install the longest life springs possible. However, high cycle springs are longer, and the highest cycle springs may not fit your door.
Choices in high cycle extension springs are more limited, though. For example, there may only be 20,000 cycle springs available.
Benefits of high cycle springs
Reduced inconvenience is a big reason for choosing high cycle springs. If a spring breaks less frequently, that will be one less headache for you.
It can leave you with no way to get your car out of the garage when you need it. You can read our article about what to do when your garage door spring breaks.
Another benefit of extended life springs is long term cost savings. The initial cost of high cycle springs is a little bit more than standard springs. But the cost of having us come out to replace them multiple times is much larger.
