Garage Door Spring Replacement - Dallas County & Collin County
Ideal Garage Doors is your friendly local expert when it comes to broken garage door springs in the Dallas County and Collin County. Broken springs on your residential or commercial garage door is a common problem, but don’t delay on getting it fixed.
Broken Garage Springs Require Immediate Attention
Broken door springs should be replaced ASAP. Using your garage door with a broken spring can damage the opener, adding additional expense.
Even worse, a door with a broken spring can be unsafe. A door can cause injury and property damage if it slams closed unexpectedly.
We always recommend that you replace springs in pairs. By the time one breaks, the other one is probably near the end of its life, too. And of course it will be cheaper to do both at the same time.
The Purpose of Door Springs
Springs are responsible for proper lifting of the door. Garage doors can easily weigh from 200 – 400 lbs. Your garage door opener is not made to lift that kind of weight.
When the door is closed, the springs are under tremendous tension. As the spring unwinds, it helps lift the door.
How Long Do Springs Last?
Springs wear out. Opening and closing your garage door is normal use, and broken springs are usually due to normal wear and tear.
Heavier doors and more frequent use can cause springs to wear faster. Having the incorrect spring strength can also cause premature failure.
You can read our article for more info about how long do garage springs last.
With the proper spring and a balanced door, springs usually last for up to 10,000 open and close cycles.
As a simple guide, using your garage door twice a day, on average, equals two cycles. That means about 14 years of life. If your door is used four times a day, the life span will be about 7 years.
We can install high cycle springs, also called extended life springs. They provide longer life than standard springs.
Types of Garage Door Springs
There are two different types of garage door springs, torsion springs and extension springs. Ideal Garage Doors can service both types.
Torsion Springs
Torsion Springs are the most common springs nowadays. They are typically mounted above the door and visible only when the door is closed.
If a torsion spring breaks, you will probably hear a loud pop or bang. You will notice that there is space between two sections, where it used to be continuous.
Extension Springs
Extension springs were more common in older homes. They are mounted horizontally, along the tracks, from the back of the track to the front.
Extensions springs should always have a safety cable to keep it intact when it breaks. Without the cable, a broken spring can fly off and do serious damage.

Of course, we recommend giving us a call ASAP.
You may be tempted to try and raise the door yourself. We don’t recommend it, as you can door more damage, and even injure yourself.
Dangers of Replacing a Spring
Garage door springs are placed under tremendous tension in order to help lift the door. Because of this, replacing springs is not a good project for the DIYer.
Special tools are required to correctly load the springs. Therefore, we strongly warn homeowners not to attempt this themselves.
At Ideal Garage Doors, we handle spring replacement on a daily basis. We are trained and have the proper equipment to do it safely. We also charge reasonable rates for our top quality service.
