Garage Opener Types

Garage Opener Styles
The main job of all garage door openers is to open the garage door. Yet there are many different needs, which has led to several different designs.
The four most common types of openers are distinguished by the type of drive each one uses.
Chain Drive Openers
Chain driven garage door openers have been the most common for many years. The provide a strong and durable way to lift a door. They are also economical.
However, because they are all metal, they can be noisy. For those with a detached garage, noise may not be a factor.
Belt Drive Openers
Belt driven garage openers have become extremely popular in recent years. Although they cost a little more, they offer super quiet operation compared to chain drive.
If you are sensitive to noise, you may appreciate belt drive. If you have a bedroom next to the garage or over the garage, you will definitely appreciate a belt drive opener.
Belt technology has also improved quite a bit. It’s not just a piece of rubber than easily wears out. Belts are reinforced with steel and are quite reliable.
Screw Drive Openers
Screw drive openers were extremely popular for many years. They were more quite than chains and just as durable.
While they were most commonly associated with Genie, other brands made them, too.
They have many advantages over a chain, but they did require more regular lubrication. They also seemed to be more sensitive to temperature changes.
Popularity has dropped off as belt drives became more popular. However, there are still many of these units still in service today. Indeed, Genie still makes them, so they have their fans.
Jackshaft/Wall Mount Door Openers
Jackshaft openers are all called wall mount, or side mount openers. These names describe how they mount or attach to the garage door.
They attach to the end of the shaft, the same shaft where the torsion springs are mounted. This places it on the wall right next to the door, basically on the “side” of the door.
This style of garage door opener is often used when the ceiling is too low to accommodate a standard ceiling mount opener. It can also be used if you want to keep the ceiling area clear to hang overhead storage shelves.
