Can I Replace Just One garage door spring?
If you have two springs on your garage door and only one of them breaks, a natural question might be whether you can replace just the one broken spring.
There are several factors to consider before making a decision.
What kind of springs do you have?
Garage doors use one of two different types of springs. Older homes typically have extension springs while newer homes use torsion springs.
We usually recommend converting from extension springs to torsion springs for safety and simplicity. If a spring breaks and you need to replace it anyway, that would be a good time to convert to torsion springs.
How many springs do you have?
There are always two extension springs for each door. If you have extension springs and you don’t want to convert to torsion springs, we recommend replacing both springs.
If you have torsion springs, there may be anywhere from one to four springs, depending on how heavy your door is.
If you have a light door, and you only have one spring, it’s possible to replace only one spring.
However, we often recommend converting to two torsion springs for additional safety.
In general, regardless of how many springs your door has, we recommend replacing all of them at the same time. The average lifespan of garage door springs is 10,000 cycles. You can also choose high cycle springs, which last longer.
If one of your door springs breaks, most likely all the springs are near the end of their lifespan. It will certainly be more cost effective to replace them all at the same time.
So, although it is possible to replace only one spring, it’ll cost you more after we come out a second time to replace the other spring. Not to mention the inconvenience of another broken spring. It’s not easy to open a garage door with a broken spring.
How old are your springs?
If you recently had your springs replaced, it’s possible that one of them is defective. In that case, it might make sense to only replace that one spring.
But you should be realistic with yourself about how often you use your garage door. This will help us determine if your springs are near the end of their lifespan.
For example, if you had the springs replaced within the last year or two, they should have plenty of life left. However, if you know that your door sees a lot of use by everyone in the family, it’s possible that they’re actually near the end.
Again, it’ll cost you more if we have to come out a second time to replace the other spring.
